Meta unveils Metadata Platform for the Media & Entertainment Industries and details upcoming API Gateway to leverage AI & ML cloud services.

LONDON, United Kingdom – 11 September, 2018 - Meta today announced the launch of its advanced metadata mastering and delivery platform, with global media company Turner as its first client.

Turner EMEA has chosen Meta as its next-generation metadata mastering platform, and is working to standardise, groom and substantially enrich its existing catalogue, eliminate record and attribute duplication, and consolidate global content libraries with a view to ultimately driving a new unified international supply chain.

The new Meta platform is set to roll out across Turner’s diverse EMEA portfolio of linear channels, digital properties, web games and growing suite of OTT services, starting with the TCM EPG, standalone kids app Toonix and movie streaming service FilmStruck.

Meta CEO, Robin Tucker, spent two years consulting at a range of studios and broadcasters when he realised there was an opportunity to create a product that dramatically simplified the metadata lifecycle, unlocking content from outdated legacy systems and connecting it with the new ways audiences are discovering and consuming entertainment.

“Quality metadata is now the life-blood of the industry, and if there are inconsistencies it can create costly problems that are compounded all along the supply chain. Data Management Review puts the financial impact of bad data at an average of 15% of net revenue annually. So, for companies like Turner, not only are the improvements in service to audiences substantial, the cost savings can be equally significant,” said Tucker.  “Through the storage and delivery of significantly enhanced metadata, we can enable dramatically improved discovery, search and personalised recommendations.”

The platform is applicable to linear content (through improved EPG synopsis), OTT & D2C content (through improved descriptions and the addition of new attributes like sub-genres, moods and keywords) and games (through the standardisation of data attributes and the addition of new descriptive attributes).

Pairing detailed and contextual content metadata with user profiles allows Turner to move beyond simple ratings predictions into personalised ranking, advanced recommendation algorithms, intelligent image selection and more. This will also improve and adapt continually as users’ behaviour and nuances change over time.

In turn, this can feed back through the entire business and inform and recommend the acquisitions process, to provide better suited content both for existing, and to attract new users.

“At Turner, we were excited to engage early on with Meta and bring our own expertise, experience and ambitions to bear in a mutual investment of ideas and knowledge sharing that we believe captures and enriches metadata in a way that allows us to redefine how we serve up our content to our audiences,” said James Crossland, Senior Vice President International Operations, Turner.  “We’re always looking for ways to improve the consumer experience we offer, and now we can provide a richer, more personalised service for our users.”

The Meta Platform

Meta allows your teams to create, enrich and curate beautiful, contextual descriptions whilst simultaneously leveraging third-party AI & ML API services to generate video intelligence metadata. Connecting Meta to your Asset Management System also allows you to ingest technical and asset information, presenting all data on a per-title basis through the UI, giving users an instant view of all metadata and relationships associated with a title. The centralised QA & distribution capability enables highly-localised metadata globally and rapid delivery of changes and data replacement for compliance purposes.

According to Comscore, voice command will be the most used search mechanism by 2020 and without consistent metadata, existing libraries risk being left behind and depreciated by audience search habits. Metadata quality is now the determining factor in how content is accessed and monetised and Meta helps clients find new titles for their viewers, and new viewers for their titles.

Robin Tucker: ‘We see most businesses shoehorning new data into legacy systems. With Meta each data attribute in the platform is configurable to be either user-entered, or API populated, giving ultimate flexibility to leverage quality metadata or imagery stored or generated in other systems or with third parties.’

‘When you start to combine a structured metadata platform with some of these modern API services, you can quickly achieve things like first-pass automated compliance, IMF metadata management and simple object storage-class / lifecycle management, all of which can lead to enormous cost savings.’

Supported metadata attributes and functions include: IDs, Origination - Country of Origin, Primary Language, Release Year & Approximate Release Duration, Multi-Language Attributes - Titles & Synopses, Descriptors - Genres, Sub-Genres, Moods & Keywords, Content Rating Encoding - All Regional Certification Bodies & Internal / Custom, URLs, Cast & Crew / Credits, Compliance, Running Orders, Rights, Transcription, Translation, Language Verification, Adult Content Detection and Segmentation with many more on the way. All values are standardised wherever possible and users can also add custom attributes in any format.
