META LAUNCHES ADVANCED METADATA PLATFORM WITH TURNER BROADCASTING

Meta unveils Metadata Platform for the Media & Entertainment Industries and details upcoming API Gateway to leverage AI & ML cloud services.

LONDON, United Kingdom – 11 September, 2018 - Meta today announced the launch of its advanced metadata mastering and delivery platform, with global media company Turner as its first client.

Turner EMEA has chosen Meta as its next-generation metadata mastering platform, and is working to standardise, groom and substantially enrich its existing catalogue, eliminate record and attribute duplication, and consolidate global content libraries with a view to ultimately driving a new unified international supply chain.

The new Meta platform is set to roll out across Turner’s diverse EMEA portfolio of linear channels, digital properties, web games and growing suite of OTT services, starting with the TCM EPG, standalone kids app Toonix and movie streaming service FilmStruck.

Meta CEO, Robin Tucker, spent two years consulting at a range of studios and broadcasters when he realised there was an opportunity to create a product that dramatically simplified the metadata lifecycle, unlocking content from outdated legacy systems and connecting it with the new ways audiences are discovering and consuming entertainment.

“Quality metadata is now the life-blood of the industry, and if there are inconsistencies it can create costly problems that are compounded all along the supply chain. Data Management Review puts the financial impact of bad data at an average of 15% of net revenue annually. So, for companies like Turner, not only are the improvements in service to audiences substantial, the cost savings can be equally significant,” said Tucker.  “Through the storage and delivery of significantly enhanced metadata, we can enable dramatically improved discovery, search and personalised recommendations.”

The platform is applicable to linear content (through improved EPG synopsis), OTT & D2C content (through improved descriptions and the addition of new attributes like sub-genres, moods and keywords) and games (through the standardisation of data attributes and the addition of new descriptive attributes).

Pairing detailed and contextual content metadata with user profiles allows Turner to move beyond simple ratings predictions into personalised ranking, advanced recommendation algorithms, intelligent image selection and more. This will also improve and adapt continually as users’ behaviour and nuances change over time.

In turn, this can feed back through the entire business and inform and recommend the acquisitions process, to provide better suited content both for existing, and to attract new users.

Metadata quality is now the determining factor in how content is accessed and monetised and Meta helps clients find new titles for their viewers, and new viewers for their titles.

All values are standardised wherever possible and users can also add custom attributes in any format.
